Ethiopia as a nation: Where are we heading

June 3, 2015

by D Demeke
The current TPLF government failed to solve Ethiopia’s chronic problems for the last 24 years. Except for the TPLF’s cadres and supporters, there is a wide consensus that TPLF should be replaced for the following reasons (much has been discussed and written about this, and I will not go into any details)
1. TPLF shows repeatedly that it cares more about its survival, rather than the national interest and Ethiopians survival and wellbeing
2. In its recent history, Ethiopia is more fragmented now than ever on ethnic lines. On the National Election Board of Ethiopia website, there are 23 nation-wide parties, but there are 53 regional parties -TPLF created Kilil on ethnic based lines, that along with its constitution that guaranty secession-can lead to the breakdown of the country
3. In its current form Kilil stops the free movement of people to leave and work in any area of the country unless they speak the local languages

Ethiopia: In May 1983 Gayle Smith wrote an article to defend the kidnapping of 10 westerners by TPLF

Obama has tapped Gayle Smith to run the U.S. Agency for International Development.June 2, 2015

An article Smith wrote in May 1983 appeared to defend the kidnapping of 10 westerners by the Tigrayan Peoples’ Liberation Front as a way to get publicity.
By 1986, Smith was a development consultant for the Relief Society of Tigray, a province of northern Ethiopia. She later joined The Development Group for Alternative Policies, a non-profit organization devoted to development.

Making Sense of an Ethiopian Electoral Score

According to the National Election Board of Ethiopia, the result of last week’s national election is that the EPRDF has achieved a complete victory by grabbing all the parliamentary seats. The same board and the Woyanne government qualified the result as a triumph of democracy, which leads one to assume that in today’s Ethiopia the progress of democracy is measured by the size of exclusion of opposition parties from parliamentary participation. In 1995, the process granted 75 seats to various opposition parties, then it evolved to one representative in 2010, until it reaches the present stage of advanced democracy with zero representative from the opposition. Bravo to the EPRDF! Be it noted that this novel interpretation of democracy

Ethiopians: It Would Be Shame On Us From Now On, Not Anybody Else

Merera Gudina and Yilkal Getnet

1. As an introduction

Let me from the out-set make clear that the very purpose of this comment of mine is to express my genuine concern about the question of how we are willing and able to deal with the shame on us and move forward from now on. When I say from now on, I am referring to this “election” which is of course the very outcome of a well- orchestrated dirty political game by the ruling elites of TPLF right after the 2005 election. When I say shame on us, I am referring to the political culture of trying to deal with and solve the political challenge that keeps going worse with doing the same old way of doing politics.
Sadly enough, after a quarter of a century and five not just fake but terribly tragic elections, we once again found ourselves not only

Echoes of deceit
On May 24, 2015, Ethiopia had an “election”.
On May 27, 2015, the Associated Press reported that “early results” of ballot counts showed the ruling Thugtatorship of the Tigrean Peoples Liberation Front (T-TPLF) had won 100 percent of 442 parliamentary seats.

On May 27, 2015, the U.S. State Department issued a press  Statement on the Ethiopian “election”:
The United States commends the people of Ethiopia for their civic participation in generally peaceful parliamentary and regional elections on May 24… We encourage all candidates, political parties and their supporters to resolve any outstanding differences or concerns peacefully in accordance with Ethiopia’s constitution and laws.
