Last year there were only 246,360 Facebook users in Ethiopia (out of the population of 80 million), so the number has grown dramatically this year, but still lagging way behind most counties. Penetration of the population is only 0.95% and many of those are members of the ruling party and their families. By contrast, neighboring Kenya has 1,914,120 Facebook users, which is close to 5% penetration of the population. Egypt: 15%, and Singapore: is 62%.
Internet and social media usage in Ethiopia is purposely restricted by the paranoid regime. The country's information technology sector is prevented from growing for the evil purpose of keeping the people of Ethiopia in the dark. The person in charge of putting a shackle on Internet expansion in Ethiopia is the notorious TPLF spy and politburo member Debretsion Gebremichael.
